Algebra I/Geometry/Conceptual Physics/Chemistry:

All Algebra I/Geometry students are required to have a basic scientific calculator.  The TI-30XIIS is the preferred model and costs about $15. Almost any store carrying calculators will have this model.  Students may use a graphing calculator in place of the basic scientific calculator, but classroom instruction for calculator use will be based on the TI-30XIIS only.

Algebra II/Pre-Calculus:

All Algebra II students are required to have a graphing calculator.  The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition is the preferred model and costs about $140 if purchased new.  (The TI-84 Plus and TI-83 Plus are also permissible.) Classroom instruction for calculator use will be based on the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition only.

Note:  While these calculators are an investment, they are used in most college algebra courses and are generally an advantage to students taking the ACT.  These specific models are permissible for use during the ACT.  (Not all calculators are permissible; check ACT guidelines before purchasing a different model.)

Many stores carry the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, including Wal-mart, Target, and Office Depot.  It may also be available on e-bay.

Students enrolling in mathematics courses without the appropriate required calculator or a better model will be charged appropriately and a calculator will be purchased for them at a local retailer.  (Charges will correspond to the current retail price.)

This calculator requirement does not imply that calculators will be allowed on all homework and/or tests.  Students may still be required to work particular problems or portions of assignments/tests without a calculator, and students should be able to show major steps of any work even when calculator use is allowed.
